Rabbi Olan observed in 1968 that this distinction was disappearing. He even saw the positive side of this change, insofar as, “in the past, holiness was often a weapon by which the powerful repressed the weak.”
But he warned his listeners: “Once we lose the ability to distinguish between what is holy and what is not holy, we shall cease to be human. What then?”
