Is There Anything Sacred Today?

“The heart of the religious experience is the distinction between the sacred and the profane.”

Rabbi Olan observed in 1968 that this distinction was disappearing.  He even saw the positive side of this change, insofar as, “in the past, holiness was often a weapon by which the powerful repressed the weak.”

But he warned his listeners: “Once we lose the ability to distinguish between what is holy and what is not holy, we shall cease to be human.  What then?”
