God in a Secular World

“Are we living at the beginning of the end of the God faith?”

November 16, 1969

In 1969, the evidence suggested to Rabbi Olan that this might be the case.  And he wasn’t just talking about atheism.

“Secularism is defined as the organization of life as if there is no God.  The most tell-tale evidence in behalf of the dominance of the secular way of life comes from professing religionists who live their lives as if God does not exist.”

Rabbi Olan foresaw catastrophic consequences if secularism were to fully replace belief in God.  To him this meant that people would be free to treat other people as objects.

“If there is no God, i.e., if the universe is not the outflow of one unifying spirit and man is a thing among things, then there really is no difference between duck hunting and man hunting.”
